Tokala is intelligent and very knowledgeable about plants and medicine. With a fascination in poisons, he has a habit of experimenting with different materials to observe their effects on his body. Due to his obsessive love of poison, he has a tendency to eat laced food which others find disconcerting. Calm, pragmatic, and sharp-witted, he is rarely tricked or charmed by others. He values his own life and does not get involved in troubles that has nothing to do with him. This means that he never acts rashly or talks back against authority. In part because of his own self-preserving attitude, he finds selfless people who help others to their own detriment painful to watch. Despite this however, he will sometimes act against these values if the situation piques his curiosity.
History:
Tokala was born in the Northern Water Tribe to a career military man and a healer. Like most men in the Northern Water Tribe, he was trained to be a warrior by his father and dutifully entered the military when he came of age. Despite this, Tokala lacked skill as a waterbender and was relentlessly bullied by his class for this weakness. This came to a head when he volunteered to help his father during a mission to transport the prisoner, Shisin. A high ranking member of a criminal organization, the group was ambushed by the man's associates. His father was critically injured during the escape. Rather than pursue them, Tokala tried to get his father home for help but was caught in a violent snowstorm. Tokala could do nothing but watch as his father slowly grew sick from infection and succumb to his wounds. He would've likely perished as well if not for his mother who found and revived him. His inability to protect or help his father still haunts him. He decided to become a medic rather than a fighter, learning about herbs and how to handle illnesses from his mother. He gained a fascination with the interactions of poisons which, combined with his experiments, led to many unfounded rumors about him. Two years ago, a series of poisoning incidents shook the capital with Tokala becoming the prime suspect. He was brought before the tribe's council of elders and banished for endangering the city. Assuming a new identity as Askook, he now works as an apothecary in Ba Sing Se where he continues his research.
